Letter from the President and Executive Director

As the Perimeter Transportation Coalition enters its third year we are encouraged more than ever at what is happening in the Central Perimeter. The road has been rocky at times, but the PTC has come a long way in addressing the transportation challenges that only a short time ago threatened the economic vitality of the area. There is much to be proud of as the PTC continues to work closely with the public and private sectors to diversify and strengthen the areas transportation options.

Over the past year the PTC has worked tirelessly promoting various options to driving alone. The PTCs successful outreach efforts to the community continue as the staff educates thousands of employees about the myriad of different transportation options. Many of the PTC's programs and services have provided the needed incentive for individuals to try something other than driving alone.

In addition, corporate involvement, which remains the cornerstone of the PTC's efforts, is as strong as ever, with newer more high profile businesses signing up with each passing day. During the past year the Perimeter Community Improvement District, on the DeKalb side of the Central Perimeter, has been leveraging their funds on a variety of transportation projects. We expect to have a similar organization on the Fulton side by this time next year.

Two new MARTA stations have recently opened and Perimeter Mall, Equity Office and Embassy Row have each invested their own money to improving pedestrian connectivity by constructing sidewalks and pedestrian plazas. In addition, highly visible smart growth projects are coming to fruition with Hines' Perimeter Summit and Ackerman & Company's multi-use development on the former MARTA Park and Ride lot.

The success level of the cooperation between the public and private sectors, and between the businesses on the Fulton and Dekalb sides of the Central Perimeter is nothing short of astounding. I look forward to 2001 and beyond as we continue to work to create an efficient and effective transportation system for all in the Central Perimeter.

Thank you for you continued support and we look forward to even greater success in 2001.

Sincerely,

Steve Moddelmog
President, PTC Board of Directors
