Working
in partnership with the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign, the PTC
has created a bicycle map for commuters to identify the best
roads to ride in the Central Perimeter. The good news is that,
although there are a few scary roads in the area, there are
also some very bicycle-friendly ones, too. The Map
Legend will explain how you can tell the difference.
The
PTC bike map was generated through an analysis of four components
affecting the comfort and safety level of cyclists. These
four elements are: 1) traffic speed, 2) traffic volume, 3)
road or right lane width, and 4) the frequency of merge lanes,
commercial driveways, and "right turn only" lanes.
It is assumed that the affected cyclist is familiar with and
uses the principles of Effective
Cycling.
Obviously,
these components will experience some change in nature at
different times of the day, or different days of the week.
Regardless of the rating of a particular road, the bicyclist
should always utilize their vehicular cycling skills, and
maintain a high level of caution and awareness. The ratings
were compiled through the observations and experience of dozens
of area bicycle commuters who ride these roads regularly.
There
are three separate elements of the map which can be viewed
on this site, or downloaded with Adobe Acrobat. Click on each
link below to jump to that feature's page.
These
maps show a number of bicycle facility projects that have
been slated or proposed in the area. Click
here to read in detail about each of them.
Cyclists
riding in the Central Perimeter should also be educated about
traffic laws that pertain to them, proper vehicular cycling
techniques, and the limits and liabilities of the map itself.

If
you like this map, but want something more useful and permanent
than the Adobe downloads,
Order your own hard copy of this map, printed on waterproof
paper. Its free to anyone who lives or works
in the Perimeter area, and all it requires is a quick email
to the PTC. If you don't live or work here, you can buy a
map for $3 from the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign, by calling 404-881-1112.

Rules
for Bikes
- Always
remember that all traffic laws which apply to vehicles,
but not exclusively to motor vehicles, apply to bicycles.
This means that you must obey speed limits, stop signs,
and red lights, just as you would if you were in your car.
- Ride
no more than two abreast, but ride single file when traffic
gets heavier.
- Georgia
law also states that bicycles should ride as close to the
right edge of the road as is practical.
- The
exceptions to the "ride on the right" rule are: when you
are trying to make a left hand turn, avoiding hazards, passing
another vehicle or when you are in an intersection. Check
the details of an Effective Cycling course, but you are
generally safer taking a lane while making a turn or passing
through an intersection.
- In
practice, this means that you should think of yourself as
vehicle on the road, but one that has a right to be seen
and acknowledged by other users of the road. Effective Cycling
recommends that unless you have at least a three-foot shoulder
or a designated bicycle lane, that you ride 2-3 feet from
the curb or edge of the grass. You are safest when you are
seen, not when cars are trying to squeeze by you as you
hug the curb. Understanding how to position yourself in
an intersection is an important skill of vehicular cycling,
and is taught most clearly in an EC course.
- See
Georgia code sections 40-6-290 through 40-6-299 for details
on these and all other laws pertaining to bicycling in Georgia.
- Bikes
are allowed on MARTA trains at all times. See MARTA's website
for more details: www.itsmarta.com.
Disclaimer
Bicyclists
are responsible for their own safety. This map
was prepared by the Perimeter Transportation Coalition as
an aid to bicyclists riding in the Central Perimeter. The
roadways shown on this map are used by automobiles and trucks
and typically do not have special facilities for bicycling.
The PTC in no way warrants the safety of the streets and bicycle
facilities indicated on this map for use by bicyclists, and
bicyclists using these roads assume all responsibilities for
their own safety. A bicyclist should use these streets and
bicycle facilities only if he or she has the requisite skill
level as a bicyclist and the bicyclist must make that determination.
Bicyclists assume the risk to their own safety when using
this map. There are no warranties made in connection with
this map, and the PTC shall not be held responsible for any
damages (consequential or special, or otherwise) arising from
its use.
