How Much is Your Commute Costing You Each Month?

QUICK LINK: 1-87-RIDEFINDS WEBSITE

Most people assume that the only cost associated with their daily commute is the cost of a tank of gas. The PTC includes the following in calculating this cost which varies depending on current gas prices.

  • Gasoline, Depreciation and Maintenance

That's it. No insurance, car payment, beautification treatments or other fixed costs on your vehicle are included.

To reach this cost, we make the assumption that you are driving a car that gets average gas mileage (about 24 mpg on the highway), and that is worth close to the average value of a car (in the neighborhood of $12,000 - $15,000). If your car falls on either end of this spectrum, you will need to do some subjective adjustments to get a more reasonable number for your commute. That means that you Sport Utility Vehicle owners out there are paying quite a bit more to drive than those of you in Honda Accords.

Anyway, check out the table below, find your commute, and see what it is costing you each month. Then look at the columns to the right of your Single Occupant Vehicle (SOV) cost and compare what it would be costing you if you let the PTC help you find a better Way to Work.

NOTE: see the bottom of this page for details on these calculations. We attempt to keep this data current but with the volatility of gas prices, we cannot guarantee that data is up-to-date.

Of course, these numbers only take into account operational costs of driving to the Central Perimeter each day. They don't include your monthly car loan payment, monthly insurance bill, or the cost of washing and waxing the finish. Perhaps most telling, though, it doesn't include your time lost in traffic- when you could have been doing something else. For a truly sobering picture of what your commute costs you, try the following calculation yourself.

Add the following:

Your SOV Operational Cost
of Commuting (from above table) $____________
Your monthly car loan payment $_____________
Your monthly car insurance payment $___________
(1/3 Hourly Pay Rate) x
(#hours in traffic per day) x (22 days)* $____________

This is your total cost of
commuting by SOV each month: $__________________

* The PTC made the following assumptions in calculating this table:

  • The operational cost of driving includes gas, depreciation, and maintenance.
  • The average month has 22 working days.
  • The cost of the vanpool is based on a 15 passenger van with 14 paying passengers. The cost estimates come from Metro Vanpool.
  • The commuter would get their MARTA BREEZE Ticket or CCT card through the PTC Perimeter Pass program, and would have access to the discount price for a monthly card. Commuters at companies that offer an additional discount pay even less than this amount.
  • The operational cost of bicycle transportation includes depreciation and maintenance, and is about $.05/mile. We also assume that bicycling would be impractical for most commuters who lived more than 10 miles from their worksite. Additionally, bicycle commuters who live within a few miles of a MARTA train station would occasionally take their bicycle on MARTA, and would need a monthly MARTA card. Bicycles are permitted on both the MARTA trains and buses.
