“Flyover” Perimeter
Parkway Bridge to Provide Commuters a Real Alternative
The long-awaited Perimeter Parkway "Fly-over" Bridge
will now become a reality after almost 15 years of concentrated
work to obtain necessary funds to bring the construction
on-line. Scheduled to begin construction in 2004, the
bridge will provide an additional transportation alternative
for commuters presently using Ashford Dunwoody Road with
feeders into I-285. That intersection is currently estimated
to carry over 30,000 commuters a day.
The bridge which literally "flies over" I-285
will also create a connection to the Dunwoody MARTA Station
and provide a connection for the Lake Hearn business community
into the Perimeter Center area
The bridge has been designed with
special attention to pedestrian-friendly amenities, resting
areas, landscaping and sidewalks. Plans also include bicycle
and shuttle accommodation. This
is a major piece in the PCIDs' transportation goal of providing
improved comprehensive choice to commuters, shoppers, visitors
and residents with accessibility and mobility options in the
Perimeter area.
