PCIDS Promote “Walkability” in
the Perimeter Area
The
PCIDs works to design plans that make walking in the
districts convenient and desirable. "Walkability" is
a high priority in the districts and essential for
successful connectivity between retail, residential
and commercial nodes. Over the past four years,
the PCIDs has moved rapidly to achieve the goal of
providing a safe and attractive pedestrian environment
within the area. The design concepts encourage walking
with ease and safety.

Some of the continuing
projects that are making this goal a reality are:
- sidewalks
along all of the major corridors that either create
new access or connect to existing sidewalks that were established
in a "piece-meal" manner as the area grew and
developed
- ornamental
lighting throughout the Fulton and DeKalb Districts, street
furniture, pedestrian shelters, kiosks that assist in directing
pedestrians
- intersection
improvements with crosswalks and safety islands that are
pedestrian friendly
- connectivity
for pedestrians in and around the MARTA stations
- bike-ways
and pedestrian trail networks to improve connectivity within
and around the districts.
