Of course, in its pursuit of the Best Workplaces for Commuters
District
designation, the Perimeter had a great role model.
CH2MHILL succeeded years ago in becoming a leader in the
Perimeter area with
the implementation and integration of alternative transportation
programs
and principles into their corporate culture. With approximately
250
employees at their Perimeter location, roughly 50% get
to work without
driving alone. Their Alternative Transportation Program
was kicked off over
four years ago with ridesharing promotion and smog alerts.
Teleworking,
flex time and compressed work schedules are strongly encouraged
when job
responsibilities allow. CH2MHILL also offers its employees
discounted
transit, the Guaranteed Ride Home Program, preferred parking
for carpoolers
as well as bike racks, showers, and lockers for cycling
commuters.
Additionally, George Howroyd, a principal with CH2MHILL,
has been on the
Board of the PTC for the past four years and has worked
with the PTC and his
colleagues to promote alternative transportation to the
entire Perimeter
business district. In June of 2001, CH2MHILL agreed to
be the region’s
first company to participate in the Commuter Rewards Program.
Their program
was so successful that the PTC has gone on to launch the
program at 11 other
companies in the area and the Clean Air Campaign is launching
the program
regionally by year’s end.
Because of their participation in alternative transportation
programs,
CH2MHILL met the requirements to become one of approximately
250 national
employers affiliated with the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency and U.S.
Department of Transportation’s as a Best Workplaces
for Commuters Company in
2002.
